ABOUT Sonny

I’m a New-York-born, Jersey-bred transgender tattoo artist and writer. I live in Queens with my wonderful spouse and best friend, Koby. We married in May 2022 in the presence of family, friends and colleagues, many of them tattooers themselves.

I’m a musician by training; I did my undergraduate and graduate degrees on the upper west side of Manhattan at Mannes College of Music, with concentrations in chamber music composition and music theory. I’m a child of a third-generation restauranteur, and spent a part of my childhood and young adulthood in family restaurants. My mother still owns and operates an Italian restaurant in New Jersey—it’s from her that I learned so much about service. Food, like tattooing, is uniquely intimate, forging a fleeting but significant connection between the patron and a dedicated, obsessive, often overworked craftsperson. The ecstasy of transformation is facilitated by the tattooer and their years of experience and training, but it is made possible only by the client’s presence, submission, willingness, preparation and trust. Together, we create. Because of you, I can practice my craft, and for that, I thank you.

ABOUT ELECTRIC ANVIL TATTOO

Electric Anvil Tattoo was founded in 2015 by Jeremy Sutton and Josh Egnew. Egnew and Sutton met while working at Three Kings Tattoo in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Named the “best tattoo shop in New York” by Timeout Magazine, Electric Anvil has been serving the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn for over seven years, with artists who specialize in everything from American Traditional, portraiture, geometric blackwork, Japanese, single needle, and more.

ABOUT R&D

I may have tattooed before my time at R & D, but I learned how to be a tattooer in my time there.

Founded by tattooers Rob Freund and Dave Mowers who had been working underground during the NYC tattoo ban, R&D opened its doors in 1997 as tattooing became legal in NYC. Rich Fie joined the staff in the early 2000s and took over part ownership with Dave in 2009 when Rob moved out of NYC. The shop is still owned by Rich and Dave.

R&D is known for carrying the torch for traditional tattooing in the Queens area. While it has become a destination for premier tattooers, guest artists and tattoo collectors alike, R&D has maintained its status as a true neighborhood shop, serving the community for over 25 years.
